Getting Feedback with Comments on Your Deploys
Anyone who's shared a page with /deploy and wants feedback right on the page, and anyone who's been sent a page to comment on.
When you share something you built with HQ, like a report, a landing page, or a deck, the people you send it to can leave comments directly on the page. Each comment is pinned to the exact spot it's about, and you see every comment in one list. There's no separate feedback tool and no screenshots going back and forth.
For how to share a page in the first place, see Sharing Your Work.
Turning comments on#
Comments are off by default. You turn them on for each deploy where you want feedback.
Ask HQ when you deploy:
deploy this with commentsor type /deploy --comments on.
Comments start working from that deploy onward. If the page is already live, deploy it again with comments turned on.
To turn them off later, ask HQ to "deploy this with comments off," or type /deploy --comments off. On a deploy without comments, nothing is added to the page at all.
Leaving a comment#
On a page with comments turned on, there's a small Built in HQ badge in the corner. The number on it is how many comments the page has. Move your pointer over the badge (or tab to it with your keyboard) and click Comment.
That turns on comment mode and shows any existing pins. Then you can:
- Comment on one spot: click anywhere on the page to drop a pin, then write your note and post it.
- Comment on an area: drag to draw a box around a section or an image, then write your note.
- Comment on specific words: select some text, and a Comment button appears next to it. Write your note and post it. The words stay highlighted so everyone can see what you meant. The highlight is drawn on top of the page, so the page itself doesn't change.
Every comment shows who wrote it.
Not signed in to HQ? You'll see a Sign in to comment button where the comment box would be. It opens HQ sign-in and then brings you back to the same page. You only need to sign in to leave a comment, so the owner knows who said what.
On a company-only page, you already signed in to open it, so the comment box shows your name and you can comment straight away.
When the page changes#
Text comments remember the words you picked and a bit of the text around them. If the page reloads or its layout shifts, the highlight finds the same words again.
If the owner edits the page and those words are gone, the highlight disappears but the comment is kept. It stays in the list with the original quote and a Text changed tag, so no feedback gets lost.
Reviewing comments#
The side panel lists every comment, including the quoted words for text comments. Everyone who can comment can see the list.
As the page owner, you can also:
- Resolve a comment once it's handled
- Delete it
Other readers see the same list without these buttons.
Who can see comments#
Comments follow the same access as the page itself. If you shared the page with a password, only your company, or specific people, only those people can read or leave comments. If someone loses access to the page, they lose access to its comments too.
So you don't need to set up anything extra to keep feedback private. Choose the right access level when you deploy, and comments follow it. The access levels are explained in Sharing Your Work.
Common questions#
I don't see the Comment option on a page.
Comments are off for that deploy. On a page without comments, there's no Comment option and HQ won't accept comments for it. Ask the page owner to deploy it again with comments on.
Can people outside my company comment?
Yes, if they can open the page. They'll be asked to sign in to HQ before their first comment.
Can I comment on a word that later gets edited out?
Yes. The comment stays in the list with its original quote and a Text changed tag.
Do comments slow the page down or change how it looks?
No. Highlights are drawn on top of the page without changing it, and only the Built in HQ badge gets the Comment option. With comments off, nothing is added to the page at all.
If you get stuck#
See The "I'm Stuck" Guide, or report it with /hq-bug. It packages the details for the team automatically.
